Tail Gate Tyre Carriers / swing away

[XJ 98]

Hey guys.

Just wanted some info on the tail gate tyre carriers for a 98 XJ.

Looking for bigger rubber, but can't seem to fit the spare into the rear compartment, so I gather my options are to place a spare on the roof constantly, or to go for the swing away tail gate option.

IS there another option ?

If so, please let me know, as this may be the reason to just stick with the stocko tyres I have, or maybe go to 1 size up.

Any help with prices or availability would be appreciated.

Jbitz XJ carrier, think only one was ever made that was shod on my XJ, now lives on RaymondJ's XJ. Bloody solid unit and the tube work looks the bomb!

I went the roof as i got a rack cheap so i put it up there has been no prob yet had and had to change my first flat tyre on club tri on sunday as i spiked the sidewall on the front left. it no biggy to get it off and on the roof

Mate, I would go the tyre carrier on the back. I got one on my XJ. Best thing for 31" tyres and up. On the roof you have the problem of getting it down. With the carrier you also get the tow bar with it.

gotta agree, when I had 31" I had one from karamar(?) Now have 35" on a warn cant see shit out back window but solid unit takes heaps of abuse

You can fit 30's in the back and some fit 31's with it semi deflated and carry a compressor. Laying it flat under a false floor will work too especially if you go the narrowest tyre you can get at the same height as on your vehicle. I still carry a stocker in the back for around town and have a tyre repair can with me as well just in case but carry the bigger spare under the trailer when I am touring.
