Default dodge 8 3/4 diff.

Hi all I hope you all had a safe christmas,
today I put in a second hand(good one touch WOOD) carrier in my Dana 35. When I first brought the XJ almost a year ago I was suspect on the diff as I have rebuilt about 30 of them when I worked at the local dealership. She had about 221,000kms on the clock and when I pulled the hat off I found the pin was badly worn where the pin sits in the holes at both ends in the carrier. 3mm or more movement. I removed the small pin that holds that pin in and checked it for wear it showed some wear but I had seen a lot worse in some other jeeps.
Today when I removed it the end was broken off and the threaded end come out and the rest stayed in there. Well I got a big hammer and punch and bashed it out till the end of the small pin gave way and I must say it didn't take much to drive it out.
Happy I found it now rather than up in the bush next week up at Craigs hut or when carting 1 tonne of water up the paddock. DANGEROUS . It carries the Family some times too!!!!.
I was putting the other centre in and was thinking Dodge 8 3/4 diff that I have had for over 20 years (dads first when he had a 1969 dodge phoenix) and ran the tape over it and it is 60.8 inches from flange to flange, axles are XJ stud pattern and the wheel bearings on these are adjustable to (not full floating) ARB makes a air locker for them as I have a mopar mag and they fit one into a dodge challenger and go drag racing with it. Randy's ring and pinion makes everything you could think for them, you name it they make it for this diff. He and a lot of blokes he deals with say they are better and stronger than the mighty 9 inch.
These diffs where fitted to most of dodge's big block muscle cars (440 big blocks) road runners, super bee's and so on , they are very strong.
I am going to look into it further over the next couple of months see what happens.
Just a thought???????

Default dodge 8.3/4 diff

Hi,
found a forum on this conversion in http://www.jeepsunlimited.com and do a search in the cherokee section under mopar 8.3/4 . I found it when I googled it.
A bloke put one in his 97 TJ and its in Great lakes jeep thing (club) loves it runs 35 and you only have to drill one hole in a zj disc brake backing plate (dodge backing plates are bolted in by 5 bolts) the other four line up and you have disc brakes.
You should see how many ratios you can get as it is widly used in drag racing 5.88 was the highest you can get.

Sounds like a good setup for you. Be a bit hard to find the axle for most others though and I would think and would require a complete rebuild due to their age now.

Hi Gojeep,
these diffs ran from 1957 to 1978 and come in different widths. The one I have is a C body size housing (one of the widest)and as for parts well what do you need.
http://www.ringpinion.com/ Even though we did not get them in huge numbers there is a lot of them still around as they just dont give any problems in a dodge phoenix as they were not seen as a drag car and people just did not know how good these diffs are plus they were to wide to fit into a A body valiant. A good mate in Melbourne wanted to get one shortend(axles) and they did a hardness test and they said they would not touch them as they could not respline them to hard!!!!. 30 spline standard.
They come in A body(valiant charger),B body dodge charger(DUKE OF HAZZARD),C body(dodge phoenix) and the chrysler imperial which I think is a little wider again.
Plus as mopars are one of the most popular imports to Australia then there is only more of them come in.
