Default Stabilus Powerise power lift gate failure

Has anyone had any success in repairing a dead Stabilus Powerise strut in a Grand Cherokee WK2 2011 Diesel?

Just stopped working one day. Would not even open. Had to remove inspection panel for lock and could get the lock to open by manually manipulating and pull external handle twice.
Stabilus Powerise PN:190487 or 55399277AD - have removed but now want to test and see if this is the faulty component, but getting test or wiring info is proving to be hard. Approached Jeep Frankston and they "can't give out service information" as a "directive from FCA" - getting daily updates from FCA help line but going nowhere.
Tried Stabilus Australia - they kindle referred me to a person overseas who has also not responded.
Have worked out that there is a controller unit (advertised on Ebay) but not sure where it is. There also seem to be some switches on the lock mechanism that trigger stops - probably not the problem.
Don't want to fork out for a new unit without testing this one first.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried directly powering the actuator?
