Default Oil Cooler

Has anyone run oil cooler?

I understand the need to run a transmission cooler and the benefits for those with autos. Would those benefits also be appreciated in a manual TD? Two different questions there. I am talking mainly about the effects of cooling the engine oil, and interested to know the benefits of transger cooling for gear box.

I read this thread

http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthrea...#post243593193

particuarly the part about oil temps needing to be around 250 (I assume farenheit) to be effective.

Hi,

In the diesel XJ you already have an oil 'cooler'. It is the thing the oil filter spins onto.
Runs water from the cool side of the radiator ciculating through it.

Also functions to warm up the oil quick when very cold.

Engine oil can be done easily, particularly through the filter arrangement. But have you measured yours to see if its running hot? I have an oil temp gauge on my engine oil and it has never exceeded about 220/230F doesn't matter how hard I run it.

As for manual gearbox, well how do you propose to pump the oil out of the box into a cooler and then back in? There are electric pumps that can do this as they are sometime used in the diffs on specialised cars. Realistically, I seriously doubt that you would need this.

I was hoping some one may have fitted a oil temp guage to there TD. But if the water running through the radiator is also cooling the oil I think there shouldn't be any problems. Now that you have pointed this out it is obious that the hoses run to the oil filter attachment. I put new hoses on these but didn't even notice what I was connecting it too!

I was looking at this info http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/engdatadiesel.htm and it says that idle oil pressure is 1.5 bars and no greater than 4 bars at 4000rpm. So i assume as long as it is in this range somewhere everything is ok and you would only need to cool oil further if you were falling below 1.5 bars?
