Stock 01 Classic shock p/numbers
I've done a search on this and can't really find the answer hence this new post.
I have recently bought a 2001 XJ Classic which a previous owner has fitted with Tough Dog shocks. The springs appear to be standard.
The thing rides terribly. The ride has what feels like zero compliance in it. It is not the tyres or tyre pressures.
The thing is I know these things can ride well. I remember my last Classic, identical vehicle, had the original shocks in it (black?) and it rode very well. Maybe a bit soft on the freeway when towing a 1500kg van, but overall very good, even with 145,000km on it when I sold it.
So that's what I want. Buying used ones is a risk, and new OEM ones are still available from various OEM Mopar parts sites but when you look up the shocks, there are different part numbers on each site and I have no idea which are the OEM replacements for my Classic. On one site, they have RHD-specific front shocks, on another there are 'standard' shocks and 'heavy-duty' shocks. Ebay US has a pair of Mopar NOS shocks with a part number completely different to the numbers quoted elsewhere. The only ones listed I know are not for my vehicle are the ones noted for 2WD. That leaves about three different shocks with different part numbers, one of which might be suited for my car.
Does anyone with a late Classic still have their original shocks? Can you please tell me the p/numbers? Wish I had photographed them or written them down from my last one.
I have just sold a US vehicle (not a Jeep) and it's interesting that you can type in the VIN for that car and the parts site then knew exactly what the car was (a RHD export model) and what parts would fit it. Neither the parts websites or the Jeep VIN look up recognises my Jeep's VIN (except the recall notices page of the Jeep site - it tells me a recall for a heat shield in 2002 has been done). Yep I checked the VIN under the w/screen just in case there was a typo on the rego papers.
I might end up with a set of just-used black JK Wrangler shocks, but setting up the front bump stops to account for the JK's longer compressed length worries me. I seem to remember that the std bump stops (which I had to replace in my last 01 Classic) simply push in. They don't have any adjustment, which earlier XJ models may have had.

Wooders (Dave) has them on ebay for about $100 a pair. He is a member of AJOR. if you went & saw him at his workshop, you would probably get a discount for cash & a $100 worth of good advice thrown in.

Your bump stops will just push in. JK shocks are suitable for around 2 inches of lift. Thir bar pins need to be pushed out and in. front / rear. Have a look at shocks at "rock auto". You may get some idea of the original part number.

Can I ask where you got these p/numbers from? This is great, it makes sense now re front and rear p/numbers. Rears are still available but fronts are showing as NLA so far.
