Hellcat produces 527kW

Dodge, one of Fiat Chrysler’s other brands, has announced a new version of the 6.2litre V8 Hemi engine, which it will use in the 2015 SRT Charger and Challenger.

The engine, called the Hellcat after the WWII fighter, is Chrysler’s most powerful production ever, producing 527kW and 881Nm of torque. It will be fitted with a twin screw positive displacement Lysholm type supercharger similar to the one fitted to the AMG Mercedes S55 V8, displacing 2,380 cubic centimetres, boost pressure up to 80kPa, a 2.36:1 drive ratio and 14,600 rpm max operating speed. And that lovely supercharger whine.

In the Chargers and Challengers the Hellcat will be mated to an six speed Tremec manual (3.70:1 final drive ratio), or, for those who prefer that a computer swaps the cogs for them, the 8 speed automatic (2.62:1 final drive ratio) that also appears in the Grand Cherokee.

There is, of course, no guarantee that this engine will surface in the Grand Cherokee, but it would seem to make sense to drop a slightly detuned version of the engine into a future version. Perhaps if rumours about the change of name from SRT to Trackhawk for Jeep’s most performance oriented model are true, this engine would be the perfect start.
