Yes the earlier Xj's ((OBD1) had the alternator mounted lower and used an autotensioner, the later model (96's onwards, OBD2) had the alternator used as the tensioner mounted higher up like the Zg's.
This is why when I fitted the 136a unit I had to change the mounting brackets as the higher current unit is larger and physically won't fit in the lower mounting bracket used on the OBD1 models.
