The numbers I quoted are the numbers in the 1994-96 parts manual and the numbers on the actual units....

Maybe they upgraded the alternators and kept the same part numbers.. strange.
I thought the earlier XJ had a different mounting - the ZG has the adjustment on the alternator?

Yes the earlier Xj's ((OBD1) had the alternator mounted lower and used an autotensioner, the later model (96's onwards, OBD2) had the alternator used as the tensioner mounted higher up like the Zg's.
This is why when I fitted the 136a unit I had to change the mounting brackets as the higher current unit is larger and physically won't fit in the lower mounting bracket used on the OBD1 models.
