Unhappy Transmission Delay in Engaging, Slipping When Hot

97 XJ Sport 305k / kms - my transmission has become slow to engage & when I was towing my empty box trailer the other day it almost stopped engaging altogether. I was pushing down the accelerator & the engine was just revving. When the engine & box are hot it’s worse. I changed all the solenoids & filter a couple of years ago & will replace the filter again today to see if it helps. It seems the engine is revving higher in general & the box taking longer to engage a gear.

I know the AW4 box in my Jeep is bulletproof but do we think it’s tired & needing a rebuild? Please let me know your thoughts fellow Jeepsters.

From what i have read before, Check/replace the oil and filter and also check the TV/throttle cable. The cable can have an effect on AW4 fluid pressure. Also, the TPS can cause slipping symptoms with the transmission.

Good luck,

Cheers,

Thanks a lot for your advice alexbrown. I'm reluctant to buy cheap Chinese sensors and from memory have bought German-made in the past. Do you have any tips on sensor suppliers (apart from the obvious RockAuto, Quadratec etc.) please?

Do a Youtube search on how to test your TPS.

Ebay has Mopar ones.. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jeep-Thr...-/250790618469

Not cheap, but they are OEM.

Summit has aftermarket https://www.summitracing.com/int/sea...rder=Ascending

Not saying that the TPS is your problem, but it can affect the transmission.
Get yourself one of those bluetooth Elm327 obd2 readers for less than 20 bucks and download the Torque app for free and see if your Jeep is throwing any codes.

Cheers,
