I have a few projects on the go at the moment including rear ZG disc brakes, 777 injectors and 4.56 gears. Also still tweaking things like caster angles and fuel economy. I checked my economy and am getting 14lt/100k with half highway and half town driving.

Few more pics of the old girl.. 23 years old now!!

Cheers,
Keen to see how the zg discs and the bigger injectors go. My 95 would love some more go and a bit better stopping power....

Well, my parts arrived from RockAuto today.
As i have a 95 XJ, my fpr is a lower pressure one, so i have a new 49 psi fuel regulator to go with the 777 injectors.
I also got a new dizzy cap and rotor. I got a new coil which is supposed to be a 42000v high output one. Its red anyway! so it must be good.
I decided to go with expensive E3 spark plugs (E35 https://www.quadratec.com/node/8200/reviews

I am also looking at a 120 Amp upgrade alternator. My bearings are making a noise and with all my extra's i think its time to upgrade. This one has 5 years warranty (i have bought a starter motor from them and never had a problem).
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/30268009...:L:LCA:AU:1123

I believe the 120 Amp drops straight in with no mods. Anything bigger will not go in the frame without mods. Also, they are aware that there are two plug types, so they will send you the correct one. On special at about $300 delivered.

I have also decided to swap my Brown Dog rubber motor mounts out for originals. There is a bit of extra vibration coming through them and its great for that agricultural feel, but i am trying to smooth out the entire drive line.

The shop i went to in Perth fits G2 gears. Going with 4.56 with my 33" tyres. 4.88 is just too much, and i think 4.11 will be too much the other way.

Cheers,

re-gearing both diffs from 4.88 to 4.56 will give you a difference in revs of 160 rpm @ 105km.
Would there be any change out of $3000 for that?
I know i would miss the acceleration off the line which you would currently enjoy.

Thanks Rainman,

Always like your XJ advice and posts. Following your injector upgrade at the moment. I did consider the alternator rebuild kits. Cheap, but i am figuring the 23 year old one needs retiring and its only 90 amp anyway.
I also looked at the 120-150 amp ones. Usually shipped from the US. Good price, but shipping is a lot, and if there is a warranty problem its going to get messy. They are all about $250 landed in Oz. The one im looking at is about $300 on special with 5 years warranty and is an upgraded 120amp. I have bought from them before. Excellent service. But i am still considering all options so thanks for the links.

On the driveline side of things. I have a dilemma. I have the AW4 with an overdrive final ratio of 0.753:1. I have 4.88 gears. I have 33" Maxxis Bighorns with a diameter of 32.9". When i put all this into the calculators for 70mph (112kph) i only get an rpm of 2627.
http://www.crawlpedia.com/rpm_gear_calculator.htm
I am screaming at 2750 rpm at 112kph.

Anyway, i know 4.56 doesnt bring the rpm down much, but it seems by general consensus to be the best gearing for the auto with 33" tyres and all the extra weight.
I have never been that happy with the 4.88 install. It was a backyard job by a supposedly good guy, but i always felt afterwards that there was a lot of extra noise and vibes. I mentioned the guys name to 4WD USA in Perth, who are going to rebuild the diff's and they rolled their eyes.....

So, i think i am going with 4.56 and new bearings, everything re-set properly and checked. They are going to reset my pinion angles and castor angle.
As for prices.. i was quoted $1380 to do both ends with new crush washers, gaskets and oil etc. (without the gears). I can get G2 gears for $400 Au delivered as part of a bigger order. Add in a few bearings and i think i can regear properly and with a decent warranty and set properly for about 2k for both ends.

I am hoping that i can get the XJ back to daily driver status. I hope that the regear, pinion angle and caster adjustment will start to get me there.

Anyone running 4.10 and 33" tyres and happy? I dont want to be underpowered and struggling up hills etc. My XJ is quite heavy with all the extra fruit.

Cheers,

I have 4:10s and 32's. and that is stock gearing, the speedo is bang on with the orignal speedo gear.
So 33's and 4:56 will be a bit deeper than stock, which with extra weight and bigger tires / lift would be a good thing IMHO.
its not a cheap exercise but if its giving you the shits as is, well its fix it or sell it.
Good luck with it.

I think the 4.56 gears set properly and with warranty should be good.

I did the injector upgrade this morning. This is the 777 4 port injectors and higher pressure fpr for the obd1 XJ. All went well and it started first kick and runs smooth. It did run smooth before the upgrade though as well. Took her for a drive and it feels about the same. The ride feels harsher though as i now have 40 psi in my tyres.

Now that i have test run the old girl with the injectors, its time to give her a bit of a tune with some new plugs, dizzy cap, coil etc. This is mainly because she generally chews these components up, and also to get her running optimally to test gas consumption. She is running at 14lt/100 highway/town with my 4.88 gears and 33" tires. Going to be fun to see if i can beat these figures..

Check out the end of the plugs. They have 3 prongs. Its supposed to get a fatter spark..See how all this goes...

Just completed the tune up and took her for an initial test spin.
She is certainly running smooth. I thought it was running smooth before, but i thought the vibration was coming from the Brown Dog motor mounts. Now it seems smoother with almost no vibration. So even though it was running well, starting well and being pretty good on fuel (for an XJ), it was vibrating a lot.
The injector upgrade, diamond fire plugs, 42k coil, new cap and rotor have definitely smoothed out the engine.

If your Jeep is starting to feel a little rough, for around $200 you can do the complete upgrade. About $120 for recond injectors, $40 for fpr (not needed if you have an obd2 XJ, $50 for plugs, coil and cap and rotor and a little bit for shipping (almost free if you put them into a bigger order).

Thanks to the boys on the forum for the injector info.

Cheers,
