I have a Moocor underwater camera for ice fishing. I like it. It is resistant to cold conditions. Also, it is lightweight and not afraid of sunlight. I bought it on Amazon for about $125. But before you make the purchase, my advice is to look through the reviews of the cameras (I found this page to be helpful).

If your wife is with you, FaceTime her and then send her phone down in a plastic bag on a string? Just an idea.

Why not a GoPro? They're built for stuff like that.
If not, get a proper underwater case for a DSLR, they're bloody expensive though
