Default Engine number

Hey guys,
New member here, and hoping you may help as I am in a bit of a pickle.

I've just bought a 2001 TJ sport a few weeks ago from interstate. I've just taken it to get a blue slip/rego check and they couldn't find the engine number.

I had a look prior to the inspection and could only find the build date code closer to the front of the engine. As seen here

The spot that I thought the engine number should be, towards the back of the block above the oil filter, doesn't appear to have any markings on it. As seen here

So, are there any other locations the engine number might be or am I up sh*t creek without a paddle?

I had exactly the same issue when I bought a JK in QLD & brought it back to NSW. No engine number.

Apparently, they are not always used in the USA, so many engines don't actually get one. Typically they match the chassis number. It takes an inspection, check with mechanic, new number assigned by RTA, mechanic stamps it & signs paperwork, and finally re-inspection at RTA/RMS/whatever they are now.

At least, that's what mine involved...

Interesting, seems like a bit of a process!

I had seen somewhere (maybe on this forum) that they stopped putting engine numbers on wranglers post 2001, so perhaps that is the case here???

The engine number I was given matches the VIN, but just cant find it on the actual engine...

The second link you posted above is the right location for the last 8 digits of the VIN to be marked. My registration docs (in the UK) have no engine number shown. Here's a pic of the code on my engine. When i first found it it was very difficult to make out. Shining a torch across the flat area rather than onto it can help.

I'm glad that you've solved the issue. It's a pity I didn't find this topic earlier as I faced the same problem. Then my friend told me to check a VIN number (I did it on https://www.quickrevs.com.au/vin-check before buying the car). Usually, it is possible to find the engine number in the lower corner of your windshield on the driver's side. And now I know that the engine size can be found by VIN number. In the series of numbers and letters, the tenth from the left denotes the model year and the eighth is the engine codes.
