As already mentioned crimping involves a hexagonal crimp around the cable.
This process is also refered as cold welding.
The even pressure guarantees a tight connection.

Using a vice is just squishing the copper cable even with the punch afterwards.
The pressure applied is simply not enough.
Use of solder leaves a lot of flux inside the core- that will cause corrosion. A not desirable state.

So, for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of specialised tools, what's the best way to do it?

Roler, what do you think about putting in the thread title what it is about? eg "How To... Make Your Own Battery Cables.
Does it make it easier to find the thread?

Thanks for the suggestion Werd. Well, it started off as an idea for a simple write-up and then to possibly create a "How To " thread, so I kinda left the title there. People would be able to add topics to it, it might be a nice additional thing to have on the forum, I don't know, it might be a moderator thing. But I thought it could be a thread that might help others out.

To answer your question about the best way;
Like I had indicated, this is "a" way of doing things, it was my idea to post this cable-making thing exactly because I don't have specialised tools, and I think the majority of us don't, for certain jobs, thats the whole point. But I still would like to do stuff myself,or at least try. One can always bring it to the shop or a pro, that's not the issue. I've done so for years, until I decided I had enough of that and to be more self-sufficient in my car maintenance. Of course a car shop can sometimes do a better and more professional job, they better!
I don't have hexagonal crimpers and the likes, but I have two hands, a brain that might be switched on at times, some tools and the drive to learn new stuff, with help and know-how from others and then pay it forward.

The best way: The internet is always right, and there will always be opinions on what is the best way of doing things. Never did I come across a subject that had all noses pointing in the same direction. That's what discussion is for. My first goal is to do things safe... getting killed or injured by your own work is quite un-cool. If something I'd do is unsafe, I'd be the first wanting to hear about it. If it not unsafe, let's look further..
Mine isn't the best way of doing cables, that's what I already posted in the write-up as a heads-up, and since I'm a DIY and have no background in automotive things, I would never shout that the way I do a certain thing it is the best way, but I thought to take it out there for others to add to it. After all, you can't score without an assist

(oh, and I think I can't change the title of the thread anyway haha) EDIT: Thanks Mod for doing this.

Thats a correct crimped cable.

To answer the the question if you don't have the proper tool:
Grab some money and go to a sailor accesssory shop or a truck repair shop. They will do it, if you spend a tip.

Just a hint to remember. The diameter of the cable has to be choosen properly. If you increase the cable diameter to big- the current which can flow can and will burn up e.g a starter, or accessories.
