Xj skim issue
Alright so iv got a problem with my jeeps skim unit (i think) i own a jeep cherokee xj 2.5td. Basically one day it decided to stop detecting the key and i get a no flashing key light on the dash. I have done alot of research on this with not much luck. Basically what i have done so far is pulled apart the steering wheel section to get access to barrel and SKIM unit. Now before meddling, the car was able to start for about 3 seconds then it would shut off which to my guess is the SKIM unit doing its job when it does not detect the chip in the key, it will shut off the fuel pump solenoid. Now i unplugged this unit and attempted to start the car which of course would not work, now the car will attempt to kick over but wont start at all, which to my guess again is due the the solenoid being stuck in a closed position.
Now i just do not have enough information in order to know what parts i need to get. Can i get a new SKIM unit module with a matching key and reprogram it to the car? do i need to replace the whole lot including barrel skim unit keys all the way down to ecu? Im afraid it may be a simple issue so i do not want to spend heaps if i dont have to.
I have already checked fuses and disconnected the battery for a period of time, i have had the PCM out to check a serial number. I have read the trouble codes using the ONOFFONOFFON method and recieved the standard "12" for battery disconnected in past 50 cycles "66" No message from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) not sure why i am getting that, and "55" end of test
If anyone could give me some information on what i can do and what i need to replace that would be awesome.

Locksmith would be a good place to start. They can do reprogramming etc. But they aren't cheap, especially if they have to do a house call.

Forgot to mention i have been to a locksmith, was told that the unit is non reprogrammable, however there is a "part" he can try and replace with an "80%" chance success rate to attempt to fix the original SKIM unit. Still tossing up wether to go down this road as it is $275 and it could potentially do nothing
