I had a similar prob with my TJ - was using heaps of fuel and black smoke (obviously running rich). Took it to a mechanic mate who plugged it in and found the TPS was buggered, showing the throttle was open 90% even at idle!!

Around the $200 mark, 5 minute fitment of a new TPS.
Not saying this is your prob, but get it plugged in and checked!

My 96XJ Classic gets to 400 before I get nervous for a garage. Snorkle seemed to improve it a bit somthing about ram-air-effect (on go-jeep site) at least the argument worked to convince the missus I need it hehe! I drive minimum 84klms a day ranging from 100-70-80-60-50 with 3 traffic lights and moderate traffic then return. Engine is 238k old.
