Default Fine metal residue in oil sump TD 2.5

Had a bit of headake with my oil pressure jumping up and down . After changing sensor , oil and filter pressure was still up and down .
Removed oil pan and cleaned oil pickup and oil pressure release valve .
Everything seemed to be fairly clean but I've found some fine metal residue (shavings) in the bottom of the sump . Cleaned that too and plonked everything back , fired it up and seems all ok . Thinking that some metal residue got sucked up by the pump and blocked open the oil pressure relief valve .
Now ..where does the metal shavings are coming from ? I've heard that this is quite normal in older cars but don't know where do they come from .

It could be coming from anywhere a failing rocker arm/s, a wearing cam lobe, piston skirt scuffing, rings, a crankshaft, or cam, or little end bearing breaking up all manner of wearing surfaces. Unfortunately short of tearing it down you will not be able to ascertain its location.
Is it magnetic? as it may help point in a direction if it is not.

In aviation we used to gather a sample of metallic debris material and take oil samples this was sent for analysis and the process was quick could determine the type and grade of the metal residue which would point to a specific location, and depending where that failure point was it was either an immediate engine change or continue to take oil samples in service and monitor.
I am aware that there are companies in Aust that do offer oil spectrography analysis for car engines but i don't know who.
Or you can live in blissful ignorance like most people turn up the iPod and keep driving, it won't likely heal itself but it could also take a long time to develop into a serious problem.

Thank's guys for your replays . Being an engine at 310.000 Km's the metal residue would't worry me to much as long as no unusual noises from inside it . Just wasn't clear where is it coming from.
Metal fragments would be a different story thou and probably that would be a bit easier to trace . Thanks again .
