I've measured the rear shock length at ride height, then subtracted the distance from the bumpstop to the axle and that comes out to 16.1 inches collapsed.

Did I measure wrong? Because the stock Monroe for non-upcountry are listed 13.25 inches collapsed and for upcountry they are 14.125 inches.

The rear could benefit from some extra downtravel at stock height, at stock height the shocks are the limiting factor and if the 16 inch measurement is ok, then a set of shocks for 2 inch lift should be fine and add almost 3 inches of downtravel.
Don't forget while flexing the shocks will compress more as they sit further out than the bump stops on the diff, so you will also need to allow for that.

This would only really be a problem with extended shock lengths. A low speed hit while flexing wouldn't create a problem, but it is worthwhile keeping in mind.

Cheers, I did not look into detail but I will check.

I will also check lift height compared to the stock quoted figures on IRO's website for instance.
There's a Jeepforum discussion saying that more downtravel than the standard shocks allow will unseat the springs. Certainly not true on my car, in the rear at least.

Jason, many thanks for the measurements, I couldn't find anything for the 4600 series Bilstein.

I have bottomed out the suspension on the road, fully loaded with passengers, luggage and a roof box. So I have to do my homework carefully.

There's also the argument that 2 inch lifts with longer shocks don't mention anything about extended bump stops...

A 50mm "lift" won't create problems in my experience but if you go for longer shock lengths you may have problems.

I was intending to buy the linger 5100 Bilsteins but decided against is as I wasn't in a position to to the necessary measuring to make sure I wouldn't have problems.

I do believe the longer shocks on the front will be OK with a reasonable safety margin, however the rears were a concern. I was also concerned the springs would unseat when flexing.

For the most part the standard suspension works well enough for me.

In the end I purchased the newer OME shocks and for what I do I've been very happy with the results so far.

So, I've measured the dimensions from the wheel hub center to the bottom of the fenders:
48cm front
49cm rear

That equates to almost 19 and 19.5 inches, which means the CRD is 1 inch higher than the standard WJ. And that kind of explains why I have no issues running 255/65R17 mud tires.

I guess all looks ok for a set of 1.5" - 2" lift Bilstein 5100. Or why not OME?

Got some Crown bump stops from Poly 4x4 delivered for $70. Crazy how those things are worth that much but supply and demand I suppose. Quadratec has them in the US for $12USD each, didn't get to see how much shipping would be though but doubt I would have saved much with shipping and conversion rate. The old stops just totally crumbled and essentially used a screwdriver to chip them out. New ones went in easy with a bit of a push. Only got about 30mm clearance between the new stops and the axle so that new suspension can't come quick enough.

Thanks for all the input guys and I learned a thing or two.

Are they longer or stock size?
