Gidday Rob,

The handbook saya that the XJ takes 5.7 litres of oil, if you are changing the filter, which you should ALWAYS do when you change the oil. As for brand of oil - you are guaranteed an argument. I have used Valvoline or Castrol for years and have no complaints. Castrol Magnatec is a synthetic blend which supposedly has a good package od additives. There are heaps more to choose from. The 5.7 litre capacity is a pest, 'cos oils usually come in 4 or 5 litre bottles.

By the way, the Jeep will accept a Ryco Z9 oil filter as well as the one the catalogue nominates. I prefer the Z9 (or its equivalent PureOne or other reputable brand) because it is heaps cheaper - it fits the Falcon motors over many years as well as the Land Cruiser so they are common as.... The Z9 is a bit bigger as well.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Rob,

I've been using Valvoline Synguard 10w-40, but since been told not to use a synthetic oil as it will start seeping through seals and gaskets, (rear main leeking worse now ) as the 4.0 is a old motor the tolerances are not as close as a modern engine. So I'll be going to Penrite hpr 30 which is a 20w-60. As wannbee said use the Z9, way cheaper!

You will need about 10 ltrs of cooant mix, I use a 33% mix, Perth's not that cold to go to a 50%. The more coolant you use the hotter it will run.

Hope this helps

How much do you pay for the Penrite oil? My Mech is talking $60 odd, but reckons I should be using a full synthetic oil, but after reading this post I am wondering............There was another thread on here somewhere that comes up as Penrite the best.

Cheers
