Mate given a CJ is light, a sweet running (fairly stock) 360 will do you well.
HEI style ignition and a 4 barrel and intake will be better again. Dont need to do that much, you need low and mid range which a 360 with those mods will provide.

I recoed a 360 and put into a CJ.
Never again. I could have put a big block in for the end cost. And they do not go hard for the money.
They are old school and a dog.
I am installing an LS1 to a CJ7 now.
Picked up a wreck from the auctions.
A statesman can be had for 1500.
You will also need.
Headers 400 Novak.
Sump conversion. 450.
Harness modified 400.
You will still be up for exhaust ands all other incidentals.
Adapter can be had to fit to trans. hat do you have.
This will have more output then an oild 360.

Your right Toyrox, the 360's are a pain, they leak oil, very expensive to rebuild properly, see what a new timing cover costs & if you use it off road you'll need to throw the carby & fit a decent fuel injection system, (couple of grand there) something the LS1 comes with standard, all the LS1 needs is a decent cam to make good low down torque,

Whatever.
I got a new timing chain cover from BJ's offroad, with freight for less than half the cheapest local price I could find. All old engines leak oil, its not that hard to fix. My FSJ had zero leaks. And it ran sweet, and turned 37's for a lot less than a LS conversion.
Fuel Injection? Not required, I ran a Holley Truck avenger with zero issues offroad, and used it hard on stupid tracks. Which I doubt Pacman will do anyway......

still undecided on this. I have a nv4500 manual tranny which is hooked upto the original cj 4.2l six. Would the amc360 bolt straight onto this tranny?

If so, it seems at lot easier to hook up the 360 to the existing tranny than to replace the lot with a ls1/auto.

I may work on getting the paint job done first before I tackle the engine side of things.

if you already have a NV4500 then a 360 makes sense yes they are the same bolt pattern but you may need to sort out different flywheel and clutch as most of the 360's around here are set up with TF auto's

however as pointed out get a good solid runner with good compression rebuild costs spiral very quick.

the logic of the Chev does make a lot more sense when you look at the end result but personally not a fan of Chev's even if they are cheap and easier
