Default steering wheel loose

Hi there i have a 2008 jk crd

Today i noticed that my steering wheel feels loose. I was stopped at the lights and noticed that wheel was moving up and down as i was resting my hand on it. Feels a bit like a knock, it moves probably about 2-3mm up or down and shakes a bit if you hit a hard bump. Is this normal or a bit suss?

Sounds like a bearing at the top of the steering shaft has gone....I used to play with old cars a lot, and this is very common on them....bit odd on something that young, though....

Not unknown for the steering wheel to come loose on the spline......
Remove the airbag and check that the nut / steering wheel / spline is tight.

A bit of Locktite in the spline if things are a bit worn will help, but it does make removing the steering wheel harder down the track so only if absolutely necessary.

Sounds like a JK...

But seriously, could just be that the steering adjustment leaver is not tight (i.e. all the way locked).

Had exactly the same symptoms a few months ago. After the shagging around to get the horn pad off it was a 2 min job. I used a 5mm Allen key (ex ikea) and ground a chamfer to leaver under 2 top loops. Google for a picture and it'll make sense. I didn't do the loctite but I see no reason why not. I suspect a 120+kg gorilla hanging on over the rough stuff caused the wheel to loosen. Be sure to disconnect the battery, as a safety precaution. Good luck
