new member with XJ 4.0 Intro Pt 1
Hi,
Jeep newbie, 1st post
just acquired an XJ 4.0 Jeep compliance plate 7/97
When I entered my VIN, it specced as 6/96....1J4FJB8S2TL329451
I read some info that shows the difference over the years, and as mine has a fibreglass rear hatch, not metal, it would seem I have '96 model.
Also no ABS, DS airbag only
This vehicle has 295k, I dont have much dough, and my mate who is a mechanic for 60 years told me these are the toughest, long-lasting unit that suited my needs, and is ok to repair.
My previous vehicle, a '98 Jackaroo, blew the head gaskets in 2 minutes when the thermostat jammed shut on an uphill, I got no warning and to fix is ~$3K..( more than 1 days work to change the thermostat alone!)
I downloaded a 97 Jeep Service manual and 94-96 Parts manual.
Apparently the '96 has changes in the sensors that can be tricky.
I have maintained many cars, and always try and accquire the correct Parts and Service manuals, so that I dont get caught out.
Would be most interested in getting the '96 Service manual if possible, and and Operators manual, as none came with the car.
This car will be my main Daily driver, plus some offroad, and light towing.
My mate who is 60yrs a mechanic, also a qualified engineer, and motor trader,
has many Jeeps and vehicles off all kinds sitting around which he fixes and sells cheap.
I asked him a few technical questions
He said every D35 high mileage rear will need diff bearings, which we did.
It had a broken-in-half mate lock bolt, luckily we could get that out, and a broken thrust washer in the LSD pack.
Several D35 diffs were apart, they all had case hardening worn of the bearings.
