Default WK2 EGR Removal

Hi Team,

Have a 2014 WK2 Limited 3.0lt 8 Sp Auto.

Have reasonable suspicion the EGR cooler is leaking internally causing me to have to refill the fluid nearly every time I drive it (60km round trip to work, 1-2lt next morning)

So, poor girl has been sitting in the garage for a little bit.

Question is, I have tried searching but cannot for the life of me find any info, would like to get rid of the cooler and egr.

I have found blanking plates for the pipe etc, but the cooler has me stuffed if I can find info on getting rid of it / blocking it to prevent coolant leaking any further.

Any one who could provide any further information would be most appreciated.

Cheers

There is a cooler to cool the exhaust gas before it is injected into the intake a light loads using the engine cooling system. You can see it in the image below on the LHS of picture or would be RHS of engine, cut away of a heat exchanger. Getting to it looks like a pain in the bum. Maybe with air box and intake piping out the way might not be too bad?

Not sure if this would work?

Usually if it is leaking you get a bit of a rough idle and loss of power on light load acceleration as coolant is entering the intake but it could also be going out the exhaust. It is a hard thing to diagnose short of actually bypassing it but that can lead to engine overheating if the exhaust gas continues to flow through the EGR.

At time it does idle rough at the lights, fine while driving. Interesting that you mention that I had forgotten it does that some times.

So would one suggest the EGR be blocked and the cooler bypassed as the first step? Is this likely to throw error codes at all?

Definitely will require an ECU remap. Bonus more power and torque. ECU remap can turn the EGR function off but you would still need to look at bypassing the cooler if it leaking. I don't know how well the butterflys seal on the EGR outlets in the manifold so maybe blocking the exhaust circuits off too would be advisable.

I have experience with all this on a 2.0l amarok where the cooler is prone to fail. Was pretty easy on that engine but the 3.0 is far more crammed into the GC engine bay and looks like from the images, hoses come in from the bottom so not sure how easy they are to get to. I would pay someone if money is no object!!!

Heck if you are going that far, get rid of the DPF too and then get your remap for maximum wins.

Thanks for the info, im defeinately wanting someone else do to it haha, have a very capable mechanic for a brother so may be able to do some parts ourselves first before we send of for tune.

Wonder now where best on Sunshine Coast QLD to get it tuned.

cheers
