No, not true.. I had an aftermarket system in my 2013 and the steering wheel controls still worked. Some units are compatible.

I've a cheapy headunit from China and the wheel controls work fine. Plug and play for most of them. Just make sure what you buy comes with a Canbus controller.

I’d probably throw some money at one if iPad mini 4 was a confirmed fit. I know the thread is a few months old, but would be interested in what sort of price you would be charging?
