Default Some performance upgrades

Blokes,
Can I have your opinion on a couple of things please.
I have an 07 unlimited Rubi manual. Looking to give the engine a bit more Pep because it's a total SLUG compared to the TJ 4.0L which is sad.

Looking at a couple of potential mods to help things out:

SprintBooster Selectable Power Converter for 07-10 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK with Manual Transmission.
*Speed up the drive-by-wire signal*

aFe Cold Air Intake System Stage 2 with Pro Guard 7 Filter
*Unsure of whether or not I want a snorkel again or not, I live in Melbourne and don't really make the JEEP swim these days*

Either this OR the AEV Snorkel + K&N Filter.

aFe SilverBullet Throttle Body Spacer
*Is this a total wank item? Do they actually help like the companies reckon?*

I'd like a good exhaust at some stage and take the rear muffler out of the system. Maybe when DBOR gets their kits moving.

What are your opinions on the above items fellas? The biggest issue I have is the delay with the accelerator so the sprint boost is definitely on the list.

Thanks.
Jim

I have the diesel so may be different, but the sprint booster has caught my eye... Anybody tried it and have any thoughts? Particularly if its worth the cash compared to paying a bit more and getting a chip or tune?

I think the 3 of these are total wank items. None of these items will improve your performance long term because the ECU will eventually re-set itself to within the parameters already set up by Jeep. You may feel that there is a difference but there isn't really. Even the improved airflow from the K&N is only marginal and it is not as effective an air cleaner as the OE. The ECU eventually re-sets itself to cope with the slightly better airflow. The only thing you get there is perhaps a savings on less filter changes... but you can buy OE filters for about $US12 ($au$15 by the time they arrive) but you would have to have about 12 changes to break even on the K&N which also has the inconvenience of waiting for it to dry. The other filters you just toss.

An ECU chip (eg JET etc) works, but the problem with them is they advance the timing and enrich the mixture so that your fuel bill gets worse. Also, the ECU re-sets itself and after a while I found that the car would go into limp mode because it was running too rich. The only way around it was to disconnect the battery and allow the ECU to re-set itself. I have tossed my Jet chip.

The only thing that I have found that has given me a small improvement in noticeable low down grunt was fitting Cat-back mandrel bent exhaust piping plus a smaller Magna flow muffler. These changes acted like adding extractors ...I think the improvement was about 10-15kw. The Jet chip was completely unnecessary with this change and made no additional improvement. I think that the OE exhaust is 2.5 inches but the bends are only slightly crushed. Fitting a smaller muffler/exhaust might be all that is needed. You could probably get one off the shelf from your local muffler shop.

For a real improvement, fit a Super charger if you are game enough to see your engine perhaps explode. I find my 3.8l petrol engine has more than enough grunt for what I ask it to do. Cheers

the ecu will not reset itself with the sprintbooster as it is not able to detect it. I have tried a few including a programmer and the sprintbooster gives you the best bang for your buck, with out changing any major components, and with out affecting any warranty.
The CAI and TB spacer will make an improvement, but nothing like what you will feel with the SB.

That didn't take long!

Not the 6.1?

Some have had marginal success with the Superchips Flashpaq. It will adjust the ECU programming to take better advantage of 95/98 fuels, but others have had pinging issues. It also seems to have an economy tune. Was thinking of getting one, but I never got a round tuit.

I guess with most engines the easy and cheap horsepower comes from intake and exhaust upgrades but with modern engines most gains will only be realised with an ECU reprogramme. I'd suggest do whatever you like given the type of wheeling you'll be doing and budget then get a Superchips and get them to write you a custom tune based on your upgrades.
