Depends:

If what you have sold is a bargin to the buyer and you know it wont be hard to move on then yea why not, give the bloke his money back.

If you what you have is hard to move and you have been sitting on it for a while then i would contact all who has enquired about it and ask if they are still intrested at the advertised price. If they are then no loss and refund the bloke the coin

o the other hand if the previous enqirers are not intrested then i would discount the item by the ammount of the deposit you were given and on sell it keeping the deposit, so your not out of pocket,

But also it depends on the curcumstances and if its genuine.

I hate mind changers, you make a promise that it.

Also for the record the least he could do if your nice enough to give back the deposit is buy you a six pack to say thanks.

Sure if there were costs assosiated with not selling it, then agree to subtract those - But if the poor bloke has genuinely fallen on hard times why would you not do the decent thing and refund most/all of his $$.
You still have the goods which you can sell.
Although you might have missed a few opportunities IMHO that counts for little cause life is a series of missed opportunities ... And there will always be more.
Put yourself in his shoes before making your decision.....and remember Karma is an evil a bitch .....
And that attitude is why I buy off Wooders. At the end of the day I would just give him the money back. If you have the goods then you can still re-sell them. And Karma is far more important to me then money at the end of the day. That said if I did this to someone else i would not expect the money back... It is a case of good will. Hell if I sold something and someone game me $250 up front with a promise of more to come I would have spent that money on a couple of tanks of fuel and gone wheeling. So there could be a delay in repaying him the deposit.
