If you go looking at putting anything more that one decent size tyre on the back you would probably look at incorperating taillights into the bar as i had a comment made to me the other day about being able to see my left side from more than a 45degree angle from the right at close distance. (think this concerned citizen Had nothingelse better to do) My carrier is the one at the start of this thread posted.

This may be old news to you guys but I saw this today. Has anyone else considered side mounting the carrier or using a combination of bottom & side. It wouldnt decrease departure angle at all and the triangulation should make it stronger. What kind of access can you get into the pillar to fix it?

Yes was a common US factory option until they switched to the bumper mounted one. They could only carry up to a 31" though as had problems after that. There was considerable reinforcing added to be able to carry the weight behind the panels though.

This is a tyre carrier fitted to the body not a custom bumper, maybe do similar from either side for your dual install - I personally would like to see better support inside the rear guards, this might be ok for good tarmac, but on corrugated roads, big load on sheet steel

If you read at the beginning a 33" tyre broke the carrier in his driveway
