I was thinking about an AGM for exactly the same reasons.

Recently fitted an AGM to my BMW 330 - EuroCarParts wanted £330 !!! Tayna did an Varta AGM for £170 which was more like it.

I might spring for an AGM for my SL when it finally dies. It's never given any problems but the battery tester shows its State Of Health slipping down to 65 - 70% even when fully charged.

FYI - saw a post which stated only Exide, Banner, Yuasa & (I think) Varta made OEM batteries which were better than aftermarket.

I changed it a few days ago because suddenly the previous one (only a year and a half old) went into short circuit! now I have installed a 90Ah with 760A starting ... it seems to be fine

Well, I'm a bit puzzled. I received the new battery from Tayna (very quick delivery btw) and, following instructions, donned full HAZMAT gear to unpack it.

As usual with a new battery I slapped it on the Ctek for a quick charge up. This took rather longer than expected before it got all 7 lights on.

I used my Ancel BST200 battery tester to check it out and found it was giving 13.2V which seemed ok. Looking at the results the Ancel said, 13.24V, 828 EN (CCA) & 100% SOC. RES (resistance ? was 3.50 MR). However, the SOH was only 77%. Shouldn't that be nearer 100% ?

For comparison the same size battery on my SL (of unknown age) which spends all it's non-moving life on the Ctek shows: 12.46V, 700 EN, 83% SOC RES 4.13 MR and a SOH of 65%. I know this battery is getting into the twilight of it's years & plan to replace it next year.

So, is my new battery a good 'un with 77% SOH or is this a case of worrying over nothing ?

I'm beginning to think this Ancel battery tester is telling porkies.

Just tested the battery again after a few short trips. On connection it said 12.62v which I believe is ok. The test said the battery was 'Good but recharge' !

It also reported 816 CCA against the specified 900 CCA, SOC was 100% (so why recharge?) and SOH was 76%.

I know the SOH is an arbitary figure arrived at using an algorithm based on several variables (i.e. it's not set in stone) so it should be taken as a guide only.

Physical size-wise the battery only just fitted onto the tray. I had previously cut away the end of the tray next to the ABS unit during some other work and without that it may not have sat straight. In the UK it was classed as an '017' size at 353 mm long. Tayna said it should be an '019' which is the same physical dimension as the 017.

These are UK sizes. The US have different names for the sizes - don't if Oz and SA are different again.

The Jeep is starting fine (as it did before) and I think I'll hang on to the old battery for a while in case I need a portable 12v source.
