Agreed - rear tailgate is not strong enough.

Yes the doors do have reinforcements, but all cars well all i have seen with rear tyre carriers all swing sidewards eg patrols, cruisers, so on, the jeeps door struts would fail quicker than they already do. and even then with stronger ones the doors frame isnt the strongest ever. go to yours and push one corner and pull the other i bet it will twist a little.

Even if you reinforced the door to take the weight, the hinges on the roof are not designed for that sort of weight & they would be mighty gas struts, if you ever went to open the door with the wheel off, it would take your head off on the way.

The hinges on Pajero's, Prado's etc are designed for the weight, the Jeep hinges were only designed to hinge a tailgate.

This is why in my original proposal I suggested mounting the hinge off a rear roof bar that went from gutter to gutter. Either hatch is not made for it. I came up with a better way of taking up the difference in length that you would get fit a higher placed second hinge too. Just mount the bottom end of the frame where it attaches to the door in a short channel the the end of the frame would slide in on small rollers.
Have you seen this one where they welded directly to the hatch!!

What a shocker. Imagine all the weight you would have to lift each time once he mounts the 32" wheel and tyre on there. Not only that, he wants to add two Jerry's as well! Not to mention the hassle of putting in those arms each time and pins to hold them there.

I think this is what you were thinking of too.

This works well as the only time the weight is on there is when closed and then is supported by the bumper.
