Default First time jeep owner Syd - TJ

Hey Guys

Just brought a TJ 2004 model, 5sp manual, 30,000klms on it with hard top and soft top, its great, fun car, but the fuel economy is woeful at present! 18-20 litres per 100klms (the wife driving it to work - only been checked once too but we are taking it on a trip this weekend so will know more).

It has mud tyres on it, bf goodrich LT235/70, 16" but i think im going to get road tires fitted to try to improve the fuel economy. i think the rims are off a cherokee (maybe).

Do you guys think sticking road tires on it will help with economy? Im not sure but i dont think there are any other mods.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jeeps.

18-20l per 100km, sounds like the go pedal is normally firmly planted into the firewall...

put road tyres on it i dont think will make much of a difference, not in that size anyway.

check tyre pressures and what not, that always contributes.

dont expect fantastic fuel economy out of it (your a dreamer if you think you would) but 18-20L is alot more then what a wrangler should be using.
sure city driving you will get worse, but thats too much.

you would expect 15-16L and about 11-14L on a good trip.

but experiment around with it - and see what you come up with.

yeah i was expecting in the 14-15 range! The missus may be driving it with more go pedal than is needed too!

Are the mud tyres worth a bit? Im thinking it might be worth sticking them in the garage and keeping them for the time we do a trip that warrants them rather than wearing them out on a daily commute. Not looking forward to paying for a new set of tyres a few days after picking it up tho i can tell you!!!

Tyres depends on size and brand but round the 300 mark each

Poor fuel economy sometime comes from a 02 sensor on the way out could be worth getting a good service before swapping tyres

Come along to the sydney Jeep club tomorrow if you want to chat to a few jeep owners
