Burning oil... What the.....?

To start off, I have a 2010 CRD manual... All stock, minus a snorkel.

So I had an issue back in April. My #4 injector went and that killed my piston ring. Took 4 weeks to locate said ring, as there were "none" in Australia and no dealer was willing to help.

Skip ahead 49 days and I get my Jeep back. All of a sudden there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust during start up and sometimes while accelerating. Now all of a sudden, my "oil light" and chime happen when shifting between 3rd to 4th or 5th to 6th.

I checked the oil and the dip stick is BONE DRY!! I put in 4 litres of oil, and 2 weeks later, same thing happens.

Why am I all of a sudden burning oil and blowing smoke?? What didn't the mechanic do right? There was never an issue with the Jeep it ran amazing both on and off road.

Pretty pissed off currently!

On a side note, I have NEVER owned a diesel before!

It is likely when the mechanic replaced the piston rings they didn't hone the cylinder bores for the new rings to bed into or the cylinder bores may not have been honed correctly for the style of rings used.
The good news is that with use the new rings in most cases will eventually bed into the bore and oil consumption will drop, but it will take some milage to do, to have it corrected otherwise will require engine disassembly and correct honing carried out.

Have you called the mechanic and explained all this to them yet? Seems like it is their doing since it started after their work - not saying they will be happy or willing to pay/fix without some work, but depends on the shop. I would start there before letting the internet call your fix. I wouldn't play around with burning oil at that rate or the boogeyman might get ya.

Other than the rings not bedding in, you could have a turbo seal issue. But we wont mention that when you take it back with a please explain to the people who fitted the rings. It is also possible the second ring was fitted upside down.

OK... update..... spoke to mechanic... took Jeep to said mechanic... no white smoke, no sign of oil burning at all..... so now I look like a tool. However, I will change the oil and filter and monitor this situation... If i see smoke I'll video it and then go back to them.

Isn't that always the case??

A little performance anxiety, eh? Good idea about getting footage next time and detail things as you do/see them so you don't have to guess or forget anything - like oil levels etc.

Having said that, maybe the power of the internets fixed it...

Ring issues is correct, even VM no longer make the rings for many of the early pistons. I ordered the last set from VM a while back.
