could not be able to get the stamps in there
if I could only see the numbers I could get a engraver pen and clean them up
I placed some paint over the area to see if I can see the little dots again if I can then I could run over them with a engraver.
it is in fact a very hard area to get into . so I hope the numbers do show so I can get the scope and take a photo .
vic roads also need to see it due to fact engine number doesn't match VIN . (engine change)

these engine do not have a stamp , there a pin point indent ,
my engine number is there but due to the mec was a blind half arse
he has put it as can not find , now I found it , but due to all the rubbing the pin points really can not be seen by these buggers , and they (vic roads) really don't give a stuff , place into the too hard basket , I will now spend the next several hours with I automatic pin punch to enhance the numbers .
I have been told the engine number is : near the starter motor (by jeep in ballarat) , near the oil filter (by BP ) on the top face of driver side bank (by a forum)
I knew where the number was , but as vic roads say and state : WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ IT CLEARLY AND IS UP TO OWNER TO MAKE SURE IT IS CLEAR TO THEM
to vic roads I say : GO TO OPSM!!!

I've been following this and its terrible. Sounds like your definitely getting the royal screw-around for sure.
Have you got your scope yet. A lot of those "etched/engraved" style numbers are easier to see straight on, but I'm sure you have already done that with a mirror.
I wouldn't have thought it would be so easy to rub off an engine number, bummer.
Anyway, for what it's worth, hang in there and try not to get too stressed about it all. It will only make it all worse. I'm sure I'm not the only one following this in the shadows wishing there was some way to help.

If you can get an engraver in there you are on a winner. A bit of white chalk or correction fluid is good to make it stand out.
its very important to eat lots of humble pie when dealing with Vicroads. If necessary, if you have burned bridges at one office you are better going for the long drive to another.

Your situation is a bummer for sure and frustrating no doubt, however I would have to agree with VicRoads at least on this count. It's your car, you want it registered and they see many hundreds a year and they are not mechanics either. I don't see why the onus should be on them to find your number. When buying a car and you do the normal security checks you need to be able to check the numbers yourself, no different in this case.

Instead of rubbing at the numbers with anything remotely abrasive how about painting the area with a basic white paint, wait till it's nearly dry then get a tight bit of rag (eg tight cotton, not something a bit fluffy)wrap it on something flat like a ruler coat it in turps or thinners but let it evaporate a bit so not dripping wet and rub it flat over the spot. I use this principal to repaint things like depressed badges etc where you what the depression coloured and the raised or top bit bare. That coupled with a bit of remarking might just get you over the line.

I have tried the thinners bit , I have tried metal chalking , and normal chalk , I have tried pen ink , paint , and cleaning with paint stripper , I have cleaned also with steelo wool , and even traced with paper and pencil , like I said fester , the engine was out of my 2002 model , it was registered with that engine number , the numbers are not etched , they are in a fact PIN PUNCHED at factory by a robot , the surface it goes on to is not a machined surface they do it on the casting . it is top drivers side front , this is where the engine number should live , BUT I have had jeep themsellf say above starter motor a bp garage say passenger side front near oil filter , also near the oil filler , (where the time date stamp and motor size is) the part that really gets me I know where it should be , but with light rubbing the number is now gone , I had that engine in my 2002 model , it was registered with that engine in it , it was sighted by BP , now it can not be found , so how the hell am I responsible for the number when it has been in a car registered ? how am I responsible when ford , and dodge so on use there pin point markings ? and placing the number on a uneven surface ?
if I was living in another place maybe closer to a city , it wouldn't be a problem .
I got to wait now for mail that MIGHT turn up in next week , in the meantime I have paid for the roady , the time and travel to get it to other places to check . when first done the silver paint showed most , just two numbers were hard to read , a 2 and a 6 , so I tried to make to clearer to read , now for some reason I have no number there ??? and I reall don't think paint stripper eats metal .
