Default WH Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Limp Mode

My Jeep 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo WH 3.0 Diesel intermittently goes into limp mode.
Initially the vehicle presented with DTC P0069/07e 8 and P0670/07e 8. Mechanic advised that Turbo Wastegate Actuator drawing 1.38 amps (spec 0.5). Turbo sent to Turbo Specialists and they measured Actuator drawing 2.61amps. New Turbo Charger installed. Also a new MAF sensor installed.

Vehicle drove okay for a few days and then started to go into limp mode again.

Mechanic scanned and DTC P0670 – Glow Plug Control Module Circuit Open. Replaced the Glow Plug Relay.

Vehicle drove okay for a few days and then started to go into limp mode again.

I worked out the days when the vehicle was going into limp mode were the hot days on which I had the air conditioner operating. On the cooler days, when no air-conditioning operating, I didn’t get the problem.

Typically the problem occurred when:
a) Left home with aircon operating but full engine power available. Stopped at shops (about an 8km drive). In shops for 10 to 15 minutes, start vehicle and it’s straight into limp mode. Stop vehicle, restart and full engine power is available again OR
b) Left home with aircon operating but full engine power available. Stop at traffic lights just as they turn red. Go to accelerate when lights turn green and engine is now in limp mode. Pull over, stop and restart, and full engine power available but then likely to go back to limp mode at next set of traffic lights.

This issue has cost me over $5,000 so far. Anybody out there had the same issue?

Dude you needed this forum $5,000 ago lol.

The actuator on the turbo is available separately, no need to replace the complete turbo.

Glow plug module won't cause limp mode, but if faulty is worth replacing before the colder months set in.
Note: Glow plug module is often killed by one or more faulty glow plugs, need to make sure they are okay.

First question. Who diagnosed the faults? Jeep or independent? The reason I ask is most independent shops can't read Jeep CRD codes, more specifically the transmission codes. The codes in your post are generic not Jeep/Chrysler codes.

Question 2. How is your battery? What size is it? Minimum 800CCA's required. Dodgy/under powered battery's are a common cause of erroneous codes in these Jeeps as they are power hungry & low voltage cause codes to be tripped (you said it only seams to happen when air is on??).

Oh, other then the yellow engine light coming on when limp occurs is there any other dash lights? Anything flashing? Lightning bolt symbol?

Mine kept putting the cel on & going into limp mode intermittently when I first got it....after I did the swirl motor resister mod I never had any more trouble. May have been a coincidence?

Thanks for the response Clarky
It's an independent mechanic chain that have been servicing the Jeep. I was informed that the Actuator couldn't be serviced and the whole turbo had to be replaced. I had new glow plugs installed back September. The orange engine fault light doesn't usually come on when it goes into limp, only occasionally. No other lights come on or flash.

The battery I had installed by RACQ when I was in Qld a couple of years ago. I think it was around 850/900. Battery was tested and I was told it's all okay

The mechanics currently have the vehicle (at their cost) trying to diagnose the issue.

Sorry about the late reply, currently working night shift & am in a zombie like state at the moment.

Is there a Jeep or maybe Mercedes dealer in your area? I highly recommend getting a scan done by them for Jeep specific codes.

What part of Oz do you live? I have a scanner that can read them.

You could try the 4.7k ohm resister to bypass the swirl motor but I don't think its the problem. Basically unplug the swirl motor & bridge the 2 centre wires on the harness with a 4.7k ohm resister. If the swirl motor is on its way out this will fool the computer that all is okay.
