Thanks for the replies. Don't think it is clutch. Completely random. Sometimes on cold start, sometimes when putting in park after trip being all normal. Upstream 02 Sensor is alien to me. I am a car lover with just a general sympathetic working knowledge....nothing technical but happy to have it checked. Thanks again. Andrew

Suggestions please. Andrew
best to state the year of yr vehicle, in "signature" makes it easier

ask the mechanic if any codes were read, as they "may" be set if anything that effects emissions, or its wiring is faulty.

otherwise it could be a bad distributor, fuel pump, wiring, TPS sensor, or quite a few other things unfortunately

Thanks for the tips. Will get everything checked that you suggested. I am new to this site and will get better at being more specific. FYI it is a 96 XJ 4.0 petrol sport. Thanks again.

I've got the same problem right now with my 98 xj it started about a week ago, I'm betting it's the throttle position sensor. I replaced mine with a $6 Chinese one from ebay to see if it would help with fuel consumption but it only lasted 6 months and now i've got the same problem. I have a spare TPS siting around so I will swap it and let you know if it fixes it, but it's a fairly common issue with xj's and easy to replace (two screws and one connection to unplug, takes 5 minutes)
