There must be heaps of guys in the US running gutter mounted racks on XJ's that aren't wrecked. If people are really worried about this put on some frame stiffeners, or maybe even some rockrails would tighten it up a bit. The other option is to run a less rigid rack, maybe a mesh basket instead, not much structural rigidity added with one of them

Cheers

All good points. However if you look at this rack. Its a very good one. Its made to allow some give. Also I only carry very light loads on my rack. Soft stuff like tent, sleeping bags, tarp, towels and things. The car is safer as well because all the light stuff is on top and heavy stuff in the back. If you look along this rack its well made and has three mounting points. However the gutter is damaged...eg: You Can See That The Rail Up The Front Is Bent....( Even This Gutter Is Damaged)
Unfortunately Jeeps are small and light we are limited in what we can carry. Honestly should I venture across Australia I would take a big Tojo and not a Jeep unless I was prepared to take less and tow a trailer. Its a big Country Jeeps are not really suited to OZ. I drive mine due its heritage and history more than I drive it because it’s the right choice for Downunder...

The roof rails are to carry up to 60kgs, why not just use a basket on them?
If you carry more than 60 kgs up top, you have rocks in your head anyway!

I acquired additional roof rails ie. so I have 4 now, to allow extra sturdyness and increase load carry for a basket, so i can have dance parties on the Jeeps rooftop...so fully sick
