I have been to BOLLON
I can now say that I have been to Bollon
Having exhausted things to do and see at Currawinya NP I made my way to Bollon via Hungerford Road to Eulo (which joins with the Adventure Way) and headed to Cunnumulla. From here the Ballone Hwy takes you to Bollon and, a bit further on, to St George. I took my time and ended up arriving at Bollon at about 3pm.
I went to Bollon because someone had mentioned it on the AusJeep forum a while ago and how they go there to re-invigorate themselves once a year, travelling west from Brisbane. And of course, mentioned that one should not miss visiting Bollon. So I went there!
Bollon sits on the banks of Wallam Creek with the town cemetery conveniently located at one end, should you need to attend your own funeral. The headstones reflect the history of disease, epidemics, the dangers of childbirth and the high mortality of infants, like many other towns. A pleasant place to rest I suppose.
There is a free caravan and camping area along Wallam Creek, with toilets and showers and plenty of shady spaces to park. There is an easy 1.2 kilometres stroll along the creek-side walkway which joins the town’s main street. I think there are about 12 streets in the town of Bollon. There are the usual country town activities to do such as exploring Bollon’s rural history visiting heritage centres and shearing displays. Deb’s Café (licenced) does a mean burger and fish and chips apparently.
I thought Bollon was nice. Worth the time and effort of getting there. I camped at the cemetery end, just in case, at a table and next to the lovely walkway. In the time I was there I was the only one to walk it! There were lots of birds but alas no Emus were seen, which is what makes Bollon, Bollon, apparently. The campsite was very busy and if one was bored, a walk through the park revealed many a grey nomad in large caravans and men playing with a variety of cooking apparatuses. Rather a bit like watching ants at work.
I have attached some pictures of Bollon…quite nice really and worth the effort of getting there.
