Limp Mode Crankshaft Sensor

Hi All

My 2015 Overland diesel went into limp mode as i was towing a 3 tonne trailer down a steep hill, traffic was moving slowly so i put car in 2ng gear to use the engine braking.

Got the usual lights, engine,throttle control,service 4wd,service air suspension.

Towed home and used my scan tool, got a few error codes main one Crankshaft position sensor, i think other codes are because on the crankshaft one.

How hard is it to swap out, looked on Utube but could not find anything useful. IE wrong series or different engine.

Have the car booked in with Jeep to replace a head rest that deployed while driving, should i get them to do it.

I haven't done one but my schematic shows it low at back of engine on passenger side .............

Its AUD$163 at Rockauto and the 2015 model number is 68102341AA, I can only imagine what Jeep would charge ....
Does look like a hoist job to make life bearable................

If yours is a 2014- 2018 WK2 has it had the W58 recall done ??? Either way it may pay to have it looked at by the Jeep blokes in case its more than the sensor playing up ........ a delaminated flywheel is not a nice thing nor simple to repair, the part is like $26 and a grand in labour sort of thing.

The crankshaft position sensor is located at the rear of the engine & the reluctor plate/wheel is located behind the flexplate / flywheel. Basically the transmission needs to be supported, unbolted & moved back from the rear of the engine sufficiently to allow removal of the flexplate & reluctor wheel. Obviously the transfer case, front & rear prop shafts, starter motor etc need to come out. Ebay parts listing info is here:

The crankshaft sensor and tone wheel basically are now on the same US govt mandated Jeep FOC worldwide safety recall TSB W68 !Initially Jeep were doing a software update to time the crank via a camshaft sensor!In many instances this was not working so now to replace the delaminating tone wheel, the auto etc has to to come out ! As I said this is a free of charge SAFETY recall to repair.I know of a couple of Jeep dealers trying to charge customers for this tone wheel replacement! It is free! Google w68 recall copy the info and stick under the dealers nose if they refuse!
It would cost a few thousand otherwise! TSB is technical service bulletin.

Jeep dealers are likely to baulk at a US recall, the W68 hasn’t been applied here.
But - this is a safety issue and well worth a bit of a bunfight considering the significant cost involved.

The W58 recall which is the software upgrade in case the reluctor plate craps out has been applied in Australia, if your VIN was on the list a letter was sent out, I thought it prudent to get it done ...... My recall named 14-17 models The W68 recall, being replacement of said plate hasn't appeared here yet, supply of parts or in hope that the vehicles maybe off road before problems appear, who knows ...

Then again a check of the Australian recall site throws up the W90 recall for 2016-2020 Grands and sounds like the fault described by the OP but with only 111 vehicles affected and a vin list is supplied.... https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-001593

The W68 recall is an urgent update of the previous W58 recall where the crank was retimedby a software update viathe camshaft sensor.This worldwide safety update was also mandated by the US govt NHTSA. the change being the vehicle had to have a new tone wheel fitted and auto trans out to fit.There is the Australian Govt mandated W58 REC 001644 extended year recall from 2013 to 2019 !
I have the updated NHTSA but posting on here I need a Rhodes scholarship!
Anybody tell me a simple way?
Again I repeat Stellantis are well aware of this updated W68 TSB .The Jeep dealer in Coffs Harbour told my mate he would have to pay $5000.00 plusTold him to ring Stellantis ,he told them if not fixed asap instigate immediate action ,repaired foc!
