I learnt the basics at metal work at school 20 something years ago, then recently bought a $100 Ozito and just practiced. Every spare bit of metal in the shed has been welded to something now.

Default learning to weld

a short course sounds a good idea there is more to auto resto work than meets the eye, being able to weld is only a small part of it.
if you looking for a how to book, i found this book very helpfull, The Welding Book a practical guide for the farm and workshop. written by Josh Giumelli. ISBN 1876068345. and then practice and have fun

I did a 2 year part time welding and metalurgy course at TAFE - taught me MIG, TIG, Oxy, Arc on all types of materials. I've always found Oxy the most versatile but if you want speed on thin gauge sheet metal then MIG is the best option.

I think the course is now 12 months with increased number of nights per week. I did the course about 10 years ago.

IMHO on the thicker "softer" metal used back then, OXY is a great way to work..... and is usefull for heating cutting and doing other butchery
But the downside the oxy can work out more expensive to setup and maintain.....
Migs are good - if you are shopping for one I'd say go at least 195amp.
Arc will be next to useless. & TIG plain overkill.
Oh yeah get NOTHING that says "SIP" on the side as it's italian for "Shyte".

Then practice practice practice.....
Oh yeah I'm not taught, I just started making my birdpoop sculptures in the shed....Although I still plan to get a proper edumacation one day.

I agree with Gildo done part time MIG at tafe QLD $780.00 but practice is the real winner. It takes weeks to years to become a good welder, and not everybody has the gift!!! Tig welding is the hardest and the best, but it is a very slow process and u need a good theoretical knowledge to get great results. The old stick welding is not much good for Panel work and MIG will probably give you the best outcome for your project.

PM me for a number if you want a day of practice.
Thanks for the offer Ross, definitely think I'll take you up on that.
