Default Serv 4wd

Howdy folks, hoping someone can shed some light on this for me please.
Started my 2012 diesel grand cherokee today for the first time in 5 days and had the words "SERV 4WD" come up on the dash as well as the "ESP off" symbol. See attached photo. I also noted that there was no yellow light on the terrain selector to indicate which setting. After idling for 5 minutes in park trying to look up the problen on-line the dash symbols went off, terrain selector light came on at "AUTO" and I drove home (approx 160 kms.) 15 minutes after getting home, I re-started the car and the same things appear on the dash again and no terrain selector light. I drove off and car would not change up gears, neither automatically or in manual auto mode.
Would you suggest there is a major mechanical issue in the transmission or transfer case or simply low oil level?
I would also love to know how to look up any fault codes as my on-line search came up blank in this regard also.
TIA

You will have to purchase a scan tool such as a Bluedriver. This will give you a readout of any fault codes etc. What is your battery like ,alternator ok? Need codes to give any advice .

A OBDII dongle combined with an app like Torque Pro will give you the basic codes and will clear most codes thrown but unlike earlier model Grands you can't access codes on the dash.......... unless you do full time spanner work on your vehicle buying an expensive code reader for a few hundred dollars or more is a waste....

Your symptoms are the first sign I had of an alternator failure for what it is worth. (2013 Trailhawk)

Then the dash lit up like a Christmas tree, as it went from low voltage to battery voltage only.

Get a scanner tool.
