Default after market trans cooler xj cherokee

I am replacing the factory trans cooler as it has seen better days, and the factory unit is really small. Do I connect it back up via the radiator as per factory specs, or should I just connect the new one directly to the tranny? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers

Depends who you ask...
Also depends how efficient your cooler is and where you live too I suppose.

eg. With mine, it's too efficient, and won't let the trans over 50* unless it's worked very hard. So I'm thinking of running mine back through the radiator again, as I've by-passed it.

cheers

You are right, it depends on who you ask or on weather conditions. My tranny whilst in drive went back into neutral when stopping, bring the revs up and it goes back into drive. It only does it when the tranny and engine are warmed up and does not slip while under power. Tranny fluid level is fine, but the factory cooler looks very tired, and I will remove the AC cooler as I don't use the AC and should help with airflow. I reside in Victoria, not that cold in winter but does get hot in summer. I have a new starter motor coming and will do a full service on the tranny, filter kit and new fluid and fit the bigger new tranny cooler and bypass the radiator and see how it works, I have read many US post on this and when in warmer temperatures or towing a trailer upgrading the tranny cooler is a good thing to do, I am not sure about the service history of my XJ, and the tranny might just be in a need of a service, seeing my XJ has 300.000 K's on it. Besides that the XJ was a great bargain seeing I only paid $1500 for it and it even came with a RWC!

I'm in Vic. Winter mornings can be around 0 degrees where I am so I simply got a larger cooler and fitted it as per factory. I have a temp guage too that i fitted the sensor on the return line. I fitted a B&M 70268 transcooler.

Good luck with it.

I also kept the Oem cooler and tan the power steering through it.

Talking Tranny Cooler.

If your radiator is fairly old, then bypass it because if you get a leak in the cooler tube (in the radiator), then you can say goodbye to your transmission.

on my 1996 XJ, I have bypassed the radiator and connected directly to a 10" Davis Craig cooler with an 8" Thermatic fan. The fan is controlled by an electronic temperature switch (bought from Davis Craig as well). I can adjust the cut-in temperature to suit the type of driving I'm doing, weather, etc.

The whole thing has set me back around $400. My transmission is happy ... I'm happy.

cheers
