Default Carrying bicycles on/in WK2

I have searched and didn’t find anything relevant so if my search skills on this forum need work forgive me

Does anyone have any experience/feedback/advice on transporting mountain bikes with a WK2. Not sure when ours will get delivered yet so if someone could give me dimensions inside the cargo area with the back seats folded down that would help. Trying to work out if I could put some fork axle mounts on the floor above the spare wheel and mount them facing backwards onto that.

Tow bar mounts are an obvious option, which we are also looking at. Not keen on roof mount due to the potential of forgetting they are there and destroying them driving under low hanging things, plus the wife has short legs

We have carried ours upside down with the back seats down. From memory we had to take one wheel off each bike , a few place to tie down with bungy cords .

I've tried roof mount on a lower roof car than the WK2 and hated it (too high to reach / maneuver etc.) so on the Jeep it would be hopeless for me. Also carried bikes inside which I found very clumsy, takes up all the space and had to lie them down with front wheels off.
I settled on a tow bar mount and being a 2013 model I have the flip glass at the back which gives me access to the rear deck even with bike rack on (I know that's only useful for up to MY13 owners though). Personally I think the tow bar mount is the most practical option, assuming you're getting a tow bar.

Boot width is approx 1050mm, height is a killer in the GC, approx 750mm high. Cargo with the rear seats down is approx 1700mm long.

I can lay two bikes down on top of each other, but its not the best, I'll be getting hitch mount rack soon.

Thinking the tow bar mount is going to be the go. Sounds like axle mounts in the cargo area will work as we have seat dropper posts on our bikes

I'm making a hitch mount carrier, for two electric bikes at the moment, I will post them up when finished.

I think you'll struggle to get more than one mtb in the back of a WK2... I used to get one road bike in the back of my WH with the seats folded down.

Thule or similar hitch mount bike carrier is the go. I have one and it's very easy to get on and off, and would be preferable for carrying dirty MTBs.

Everyone I know who has roof mounted racks has at some point forgotten about them and driven into a garage, drive thru, carpark, etc. and damaged bikes/roof. I would avoid at all costs.
