Has anybody out there with a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee RHP 731 nav radio being able to update the naviigation maps without going through Jeep and paying through the nose.

Updating the headunit to the latest software should not cost you a cent , I have a copy of the latest update for RHP / REP units and I chexk and update any that come in for service , the update for the NAV section is minimal anyway there are no new map software updates to speak of for any of the Jeep Nav units , the new 2014s are all Garmin based but are basic and Garmin as far as I know dont supply chrysler with mapping updates like they do with stand alone dedicated NAV/ GPS units

If all the 2014 units are Garmin is chrysler saying the 2011-2012 731 chrysler nav unit issues can't be fixed?

What problems are you having , if reception is an issue move the gps receiver to the right hand side of the dash near the a-pillar or remove some of the dash insulation from above the reciever this can also help the update software is performanced based only as far as I understand as for actual latest map updates most manufacturers are the same they are limited by licensing restrictions and cant offer the latest updated maps or the units are not capable of being updated in this way , nissan and suzuki can be but there mapping software is external on an SD Card so new maps mean a new card .

Thanks for the info. It would seen new maps can't be updated/uploaded to the unit. Maybe an electronics expert may one day sort out a way for the factory radios to be updated just like the aftermarket GPS's. We can only hope.

The Chrysler GPS doesn't work very well in southern NSW, it keeps wanting to route you through Sydney and doesn't recognise a lot of the roads etc. I have logged a job with Chrysler and it is a known issue that they are working on to repair.
