Default wheel locator lugs - don't locate?

Had my tyres rebalanced after the previous shop did a sh!t job.

The guy pointed out that my procomp 98 steelies' centre bore was larger than the wheel locator lugs on the hub.

Question is how much of a problem is this in terms of the stress only on the bolts only? And is it possible to get an adaptor, as such, to transfer some load to the wheel hub locator lugs? Are others having this problem?

How much of a problem I dont know and will leave for someone who knows to answer, but I did read somewhere that it makes the rims not legal in QLD.

Given that the wheels are pretty much JK specific ie I don't know any other makes that run 5 x 5" spacing its got me worried.

It is bizarre, as I thought they were all pretty much the same size (the hole in the middle!) and never really gave it any thought. Will see if I can find the bits I read that lead me to believe it wasnt legal and why.

EDIT: Found this on the SpeedyWheels.com.au site:
Quote:
Hub Location - Alloy Wheels

The hub hole is the hole in the centre of the wheel which mates with the centre hub of the car.

By not locating a wheel on the cars’ centre bore, the vehicle can sometimes encounter vibration problems.

All Speedy alloy wheels are either supplied with centre bore locating rings or are machined to be a perfect fit with the vehicles hub to completely eliminate any of the above mentioned scenarios.
Note it refers specifically to alloy wheels though. But then maybe they dont sell steel wheels??

"I think" the centre bore location rings may be what I'm after. But I've never heard of them.

You'll find production wheels aren't a slide fit on the hub... its the studs that hold the wheels central in practice.

It is good engineering practice to actually have the wheels a slide fit over a locator boss - but in practice it makes for problems as crud/rust/corrosion make it a PITA to get the wheels off after a period of exposure. Manufacturers no longer aim for this as its just impractial in the real world.

There are however tricks to getting a wheel central when held by studs.... a colleague who services / installs wheel balancers gave me a lecture on the rights and wrongs of what appeared a simple process.

Also I found that if you want to use std JK rims on a trailer, they have to machine out the centre holes to fit over the hub of the trailer. Partially defeating the idea of having rims/tyres to fit both, but if you can get some locator rings as well, then not such an issue, I guess.
