Default Help - my new wheels dont fit

Hey Guys

After doing a lot of reading on here, I ordered my tyres and wheels about 3 weeks ago for my new 2013 Rubicon Unlimited. They got in yesterday so I went down to the tyre shop today to get them fitted, but the wheels dont fit

He put just the wheel on the Jeep to check it, with no tyre, and the wheel sticks out past the factory flare by 2.1 inches! Looks ridiculous. And thats without the tyre on, the tyre will stick out even further. I was expecting it to only just stick out. He ended up telling me that it was sticking out too far, and he didn't feal comfortable fitting them. So he has my tyres and wheels still, and now im not sure what to do. It's my fault because I told him what wheel and tyre dimensions to order.

After the weeks of research I did I got these:

5 x XD Rockstar Black 17x9 (-12mm / 4.5 inch offset) with (5x127mm bolt pattern)
5 x Mickey Thompson Baja Radial MTZ 285/70R17

What have I done wrong? Why do the wheels stick out so far? Everything I read, and everyone I spoke to said, go 4.5 inch backspacing which I did.

The Jeep also has a 2 inch dealer installed lift kit, so I wasn't expecting any problems at all with this combo

Cheers

Thats quite possible because I don't really understand what either are! What I wrote in my first post is exactly what I wrote in my email to the tyre shop when I ordered. I noticed I wrote 4.5 inch offset instead of 4.5 inch backspacing. But when I was there this morning I said to him "Are you sure its 4.5 inch backspacing" and he had a look at the wheel and said "yeah they are all 12mm". So im confused lol.

Factory BS is 6.25" and as you got 4.5" so in simple terms it will push out nearly 2". Other option is to get some wider flares to keep tyres within guards. I run 4.5" BS on 17x8 rims with 35x12.5 tyres and run xenon flat fender flares which keeps tyres well with in flares

Yeah it would push out 2 inches, but the factory wheels are already about an inch and a half within the factory flares, so if it pushes it out 2 inches, that should only push it to half an inch past the factory flares. But it's pushed it out 2 inches past them.

Yeah I was actually going to get some flat fender flares when I went to 35s, but if it seems that these wheels are actually correct ones I should have got, then I didn't realise I would need flares for them right away, I thought they would fit under the factory flares, and my 285/70R17 tyres would stick out just a bit, which I was hoping to get away with.

So you reckon its normal for the wheels to stick out 2 inches past the factory flares, with 4.5 inch backspacing? If so I might need to get get some new flares next week!

I had a simmiliar experience when putting different rims on my KK Cherokee.... might be the same for you.

When they "test-fit" a rim whilst the car was up on the hoist it stuck out by a good few inches also and they refused to do it.... clearly illegal and looked ridiculous. I KNEW these rims would fit within the guards though as I'd researched the crap out of em and had seen photos online of others with them so went out to check it out. Turned out to be the following two issues.

1) There are small metal rings surrounding the rim studs on the vehicle that I believe are put there during manufacturing to hold it in place. The stock rims on a Jeep (well mine atleast) have recessed holes to accomodate this whilst the aftermarket rims didn't.... causing them to stick out about 1cm and not sit flush. You can just remove these... they pry off easily with a screwdriver or pliers. I've seen a youTube clip once of someone doing it on a JK also.

2) When the car is on the hoist the suspension drops and made it appear like the rims, at least the tops of them are sticking out from the flares. Once I made them put a tyre on and lower the car again the suspensionand tyre tucked back in under the well and everything was fine and within the flares again.

Hey Brad, this is a picture explaining the different terms and referring to the stock JK 7.5in rims:

This is a diagramatic representation of your new wheels to your stock wheels:

And this is the raw data comparison - as you can see the outer edge of the tyre will be 3in further out than stock. To keep 285's inside stock guards totally an offset of around +20mm is pretty much all you go.

The last two pics are from the calculator on http://www.rimsntires.com
