Sorry to hear your troubles Fester. If you can get to Hervery Bay (about 180 kms) Jeeeparts at 5 Beck Road would be able to help you out. I got good service there. Peter Darlison (07)4128 9422 or email peterd@j-p-r.com

Thanks guys, got it towed back home (Gympie). Thought about the Rainbow guy, have know his existence for years but thought he was more old school Jeep.

Haven't looked yet, too pissed off. Ready to sell already.

I suspect the heat exchanger oil cooler too, RACQ guy immediately said head gasket but it happened too fast I think. The dipstick is hardly reading so there is a lot of oil displaced in the space of say 10 minutes light driving and there is no trace of coolant on the dipstick or the exhaust.

Thing is this is the second time the oil cooler has lunched itself as the previous owner gave me the receipt for his repair of it as the repair is still under warranty. Can't find the receipt yet but not sure if it will help me as the repair was done on Gold Coast and can't remember if at Jeep or elsewehere. Even if it was done at Jeep the nearest dealer for me is Gricks on Sunshine Coast an hour away and I've not heard good reports about them, they can't even read the 2.7 properly to diagnose.

The last time this was done they pressure tested the original cooler and found it leaking internally (owner showed me the cooler with writing from tests over it) . Not sure if this one will be the same or an oring has let go or displaced. What is the common failure point of these things.

If it is the cooler and seems highly likely, given it's happened twice now I'm seriously thinking of seeing if it can be removed and replumbed to a good old fashioned external oil cooler. Anyone heard of this being done. I'm thinking a loop circuit for the coolant so it doesn't stop at dead end and piping to and from a front mount oil cooler.

are we talking about the oil cooler mounted on the engine?
I read some were it is a heat exchanger not a oil cooler.
Designed to use the coolant to warm the oil up faster.
Just sharing my thoughts.

Yes talking aobut engine mounted exchanger. Just about everywhere simply refers to it as a cooler. It is heat exchanger in same principal as air to water intercooler with associated heat exchanger so not sure of the actual funtion of oil warmer. I would have thought engine oil would warm quicker than water but not sure.

At any rate this is the 3rd one on this engine. Apparently MB confirmed to PO that they had bad batch at some time and were removed from sale maybe not all were. This has happened after 7,000kms and under 12 months.

Warranty is possible from dealer that did last job but is quite unlikely to be cost effective due to distance away and fact I have to get vehicle there. So now looking at cost of replacement or whether to continue down bypass route. Will knwo more when I get the old one off to see how hard to bypass and how much room for replacement cooler out front.

Online enquiry shows this to be quite a rare occurance on this engine so still hoping it's not more involved. Won;t knwo till I can get it off and pressure test it.
