immobiliser
In an update you won't get passed the factory immobiliser as it is intergrated into the PCM and the skimmer on the igniton switch. It reads the transponder in the key and if valid allows the engine to run, There is a key symbol that lights up if the system is active and the engine is immobilised. You can't get around this system. I guess the pre update may be similiar???

If someone could confirm this would be great. My pre update xj has the immobilizer light as an LED next to the shifter. Flashes when on, turns off when the button is pressed again. Doesn't seem as integrated as the post update.
Is mainly like to know as I plan on getting a system in the morning.

Pre-updates don't have a factory immobiliser, you should be able to restore it back to normal, I did the same when I swapped in an OBD2 loom into my OBD1 95 model, I had to do some repairs to get the wiring back to original....

What kind of repairs would I be looking at? Do I have some aftermarket crap already then do I?
Where abouts on the loom would I be looking on my car? And if I connected the aftermarket system into the existing one would it work fine?

I'd be looking up under the dash for a relay that isn't factory, that's how the immobilisers work normally, they usually cut the feed to something, maybe the starter feed, to remove it is just a matter of removing the relay and restoring the wiring back to normal, I'd recommend solder and heatshrink....

immobiliser
Worst case trace back from the LED light.
As junglejuice said it there should be a controlbox somewhere that will cut ignition or start circuit. should be easy to re-join the wires that it interupts.
Does it crank over and not start or just won,t crank???
