Default Air Con fan

So, my A/C fan took a nose dive.
I turned up a second hand unit through a mate, who actually had 2 to choose from.
However, 1 had 3 wires, Blue/Black/Blue, and the other was the same as mine. Blue/Black. Anyone know the difference? Is the 3 wire version 2 speed or variable speed??

I pulled the cover off my dead one, and the motor is a Bosch unit, so currently looking around for a source.

FYI, the assembly can be removed with out removing the engine fan, but you need to loosen the crossbar above the rad, so you can carefully pull it forward and then lift the shroud up and wiggle it out. Get underneath, and either cut about 10mm off the lower edge, about 150mm wide, or make a notch or 2 in the same area. Then with a friend, gently lift up while friend rotates the engine fan, so that the little cast lugs on the hub can clear the notches you made. If you want a pic, sing out...

On the 3.7lt V6 petrol....
The electric fan is the primary source of cooling, it sits on the same side of the radiator as th viscous fan.

Yes you can remove it as u have said, but rather than chop things, and risk damage to the rad..... why not jst buy a cheap 36mm open ended spanner.

The correct electric fan for ur model is readily available secondhand, they are a dime a dozen, try B&T Jeep Sales out at malaga,

While I appreciate u and many other owners like to "work stuff out and sort it good" some things well it just seems like re-inventing the wheel for no purpose.

Wait, the electric fan is the primary fan? So it must run constantly, and the viscous fan only part time?

Anyways, I already sourced a 2nd hand unit, and they are not a dime a dozen. ($150 from a place in Malaga [not B&T] and up to $275, if you wanna spend big bux at Tonys wreckers)

Regardless, my question was: Anyone know why there is a 2 wire and a 3 wire version....

As with anything Chrysler...there is no rhyme or reason for a lot of changes on Jeeps.
I think from memory the 2 wire is the early version, the later 3 wire. The later is also a variable speed, which explains the 3 wires. As in there is a signal wire there.

I changed mine out a few weeks ago..... I went to B&T, there was a shelf of them to pick from as apposed to the diesel electric fan that whenever I see one, I buy it regardless of my current need. While I dont particularly trust any wreckers, some are taking a lend of people more than others.

Re fan, yes the electric fan will run a lot more than on a diesel, the petrol V6 electric fan pulls air through the rad and being so close to the viscous coupling reduces the amount of time the viscous fan is running locked. I assume this is to optimise fuel consumption.
