Exclamation Butane ‘lunchbox’ cookers BANNED

Went online shopping for a portable butane stove (canister type) & found out they have been banned in NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA & NT!

http://www.elgas.com.au/blog/1419-ns...nchbox-cookers

What is everyone using instead? Is there an approved version available?

Are Coleman disposable LPG burners a viable alternative?

I'm fairly sure it's banned from sale but not from use (at own risk) if already owned.
I use a circular gas BBQ and have a 2-burner stove both of which run off refillable LPG bottles. Plus the stove in the campervan.

Quick thought? If an event organiser like Camp Coff's or Jambo allowed the use of these products at there event, even at users own risk & an accident occurred would the organiser be liable as the use of these burners have a known risk

Don't want to be a party pooper but aren't friends & family worth more then a $30 cooker? I just want everyone to have a safe & enjoyable Easter.

I have been using mine for 10 years & never had a problem.
Its a Travel master TM2000 & was made in Korea. It has Full certification approval from The Australian Gas Association. It also has clear warnings on it about the improper use.
Most of those that are on the banned list are made in China ~ why am I not surprised? i have heard that some do not have proper isolation between the burner area & the canister.
The information in your link from Elgas (a LPG supplier & so competitor) is very over stated. They want all butane devices banned as their use has had a very negative impact on LPG use in these areas.
You cant design to prevent stupidity in operation. if they could we would have zero road toll.
I will continue to use my little stove & have purchased a good supply of butane bottles. I have probably used about 50 bottles since I got the stove without a problem.
There are plenty of sheeple out there that should not use these stoves. You do require an IQ bigger than your age & a bit of common sense to safely use one.
When I see footage of these stoves being used for indoor cooking with a pan big enough to feed a tribe, I am not surprised that there is a problem. In the open air with a pan the size recommended all is fine.
I used a kero pressure lantern for years without problem despite knowing they could explode if misused. Some campers use a similar (Trangia) device for cooking that uses pressurized unleaded petrol. I have seen one of them turn to a fire ball in a very remote location.
I saw last weekend Aldi were selling small heaters that used the butane cartridges, I wonder how long it will be before improper use of one will cause a fire & then there will be calls for them to be banned.
If you are common sense challenged or not at all practical minded, items like these are not for you, along with many other devices that can be purchased.
Probably its fair to say a significant proportion of the population should not go camping or visit remote parts of the country, or even go to the beach.
Sheeple should not be relying on authorities to guard them against their stupidity.

I have had one of these for ages and never had a problem with it , but it seems there are some folks that like to lay gas bottles on there side , I have even seen oxy bottles stored on there sides in cars/vans.
so why have they been banned ?

I agree with layback , some people seem to think they don't have to check to see if bottle sealed , and or pick them up while still alight , or place them on a downward angle where the fluid can gurgle , the empty canisters should not be chucked on to the fire , nor should canisters be stored on there side when not plugged in. and if you don't ensure that the canister is "locked" in , well of course it will blow.

Clarky, do you work for an Elgas distributor by any chance?
Have you ever seen what happens when a small unregulated LPG bottle gets tipped over & gives liquid to a burner? We used to do it when we were younger to make a flame thrower. Not suggesting any one try this.
