Default Transfer case/Gearbox problem

Does any one this problem? Last weekend, after a trip in the bush for most of the day, I changed from 4LO to 4 part time as we were still on a dirt road but able to do over 60k's. As soon as the road was in sight, I changed to 2WD. But the "Part Time" light stayed on and did for some time. I know is not a good thing to drive on dry bitumen (sp). Not untill I drove in reverse did it disengage 4Wd mode.

My question is. How can I stop this from happening again? Again today, I moved into 4 part time and back again. The light went out but was still in 4 part time.

Do I need an oil and filter on the gearbox and transfer case to solve this problem? Or is there another problem I have overlooked?

Cheers

Default Transfer case/Gearbox problem

I have kinda the same prob with my cherokee. What I do is blip the throttle once or twice and it kinda thunks (the lever coming out of 4wd into 2wd). rest your hand on the lever and you should feel it disengage. If not, you'll have to reverse. That.. as far as I know, is the way it says in the manual!

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Read on here once b4 from someone saying to slip her into Neutral... on the Auto that is while youve got some speed under your wheels... then shift your tranny into the gear you want... 2wd / 4wd... give the throttle a tap or two and u can hear it change over... then pop it back into drive... Mind you this is for an Auto...

Default Transfer case/Gearbox problem

Hi,

You just had a bit of driveline "wind-up" where there is "tension" developed between front and rear axles by the slighly different rotational needs as you driev around corners, have minutely diff tyre size etc etc.

Usual way to undo the wind-up is to blip the throttle a few times, maybe tap the brakes or small swerve side to side. Basically anything to cause slight wheel "slip" somewhere to release the tension through the driveshafts and let the 4wd gearshift disengage.
Others mentioned short reversing etc etc.

Very common problem in all 4wd used in part time mode.

Cheers

DXJ - spot on. Drive train wind up. It's a killer.
Shift to neutral, blip throttle, drive backwards - all will release tension on the drive train and come out of gear.....

If in 4WD Low - proceed with caution until certain you are back in 2HI or 4HI
