I always thought it was pretty important that a 5w30 oil was used. So is this not the case? It would be good if not as that is so expensive.

I've been running the fully synthetic Nulon 5w30

Any good 10w-40 detergent oil is fine in a diesel engine, just change it more regularly (5000km) Synthetic oils just use more additives to due the job and stretch the service intervals out to 12000-15000km.
Clean oil is far more important.
We were running $400000 1500kw V12 Cats in the desert on Delvac 10w40 there is nothing high tech about the VM Diesel or the 3.8L good quality mineral oil is fine

How many crd owners here actually use 10w-40, or is it just a select few?

What is important is the quality of the oil. A very good mineral oil is better than an inferior synthetic that does not meet lubricity, sheer, surfactant, and soot control specifications.

What have you been using up until now? And has it been consistent with every oil change? If you were concerned, go 5W-40 in the winter and 10W-40 in the summer. I live in FNQ tropics where it is warmer most of the time, so I run Penrite 10W-40 extra 10. It is recommended where 10W-30 is also used. Plus is what is recommended by the suitability website. What does the manufacturer state to use? Here is an oil chart.

So I have decided I'm going with 10w40 for my next service but I speak to a lot of of 4wd owners and it's mixed response regarding full synthetic or mineral?

Id use full synthetic if only to protect the turbo from coking. The amount of oil that passes through the turbo is only a tiny amount, it has a big job to do. Mobil 1 Delvac is one of the best.

I'd say being full synthetic it protects itself from quick cooking by the turbo...
