Yes its almost not worth the hassle unless you're buying rims as well

If the total cost of the tyres is over $1000 you'll have to pay import duty something you need to consider as well.

I've bought tyres twice from onlinetires.com and had them shipped by usatoaus.com

At the time it was much cheaper than getting them locally but with the current exchange rate it probably will end up about the same. It will also take 3 months or so to arrive which will be a problem if you want/need them straight away.

If you are after a brand or size that isn't available here then that would be a good option to consider.

Not for vehicle parts, due to the trade agreements with the US. They are excepted from Duty. Once you get over the $1000 you do still have to pay GST, though. (If you are importing from other countries, though, you probably will need to pay Duty.)

I have bought parts for well over $1000 from the US & never had Customs ask for Duty when they were fully declared on import.

Yeah keep them under $1000 and there's nothing to pay, break the shipments up into a couple to keep under $1000 to avoid any charges. Have done this many times and last time I couldn't and the lady from customs even said " next time break the shipments" was nice of here..

I've always thought this is the tactic to get around the $1000 + importation.

I've had a look at the trade agreement and I couldn't see anything in there that exempted the importation of vehicle parts from the US in excess of $1000 from duty. The trade agreements allows the importation of vehicle parts from the US but it seems to me that "duty" is a separate issue and controlled by Customs legislation.

They refer to "Goods" meaning other than prohibited goods as specified, I couldn't find any exemption in their legislation for "car" parts.

For goods that are worth more than AUD1,000, you will need to fill out a special form called an Import Declaration, and pay duties, taxes and charges.

I'd be interested to see information regarding car parts being exempt.

I found this site which indicates there's a 5% duty and 10% sales tax on car parts imported into Australia, so if car parts in excess of $1000 imported from the US to here are not exempt it would amount to a fair bit of coin.

http://www.dutycalculator.com/popula...for-car-parts/

I think if I intended to import in excess of $1000 of parts from the US I'd be asking customs for clarification.

When I bought mine in from tirerack.com the total cost including shipping was around$1154 aud from memory.

Because tirerack put the sales invoice as the top page customs didn't look at the other pages. The invoice was for the tyres only not including shipping so I avoided having to pay GST.

The other funny thing was as they saw the tyres came from the US there was no import duty to be paid on US manufactured goods. Glad they didn't notice the tyre were Japanese made Yokohama's!

I've been bring camera gear worth thousands into Australia for over a decade and I've never had to pay import duty or GST, probably luck in several cases.

When I bought in a lighting desk worth $15,000aud I did have to pay GST but not import duty as it was US manufactured.

From what Customs have told me directly, GST on all items over $1000Aud including freight costs but no import duty on US manufactured goods.
