Default Advice Wanted For First Jeep Purchase

Hey folks...

I'm new to the forum and am getting close to pushing the button on my first ever Jeep - a 2012 manual CRD JK!

I wondered though (before I take the plunge) whether some of the experts out there might give me some pointers on what I should be looking out for in this type of vehicle (say in a pre-purchase inspection) and indeed what you think of the 2.8 diesel vs the 3.6 petrol?

Also, any thoughts on know issues/problems etc with the manual transmission vs the auto would be much appreciated?

Thanks in advance...

Don't do it, you will be constantly upgrading and penny less for the rest of your life.
Might just as well be posting "I'm new to drugs but can't decide between ice and smack"....

Seriously, think about your intended use and that will help. An NRMA/RACV inspection will be looking at a standard list for mechanical and roadworthy. Any options or upgrades fitted may not be noted or approved by this.
If it's modified or upgraded a specialist 4wd jeep shop is a better choice.

Thanks for the feedback. I was certainly planning on getting a 4x4 shop to inspect any potential purchase.... but I was more interested to know if there were any known / design issues with the petrol vs the diesel or with either transmission type?

Manual transmission is a love/hate thing. Clutch is probably a little undersized.

The auto is good with few issues. Turbo diesel works well with auto.

Like any modern turbo diesel repairs can get very expensive. Obviously less mechanics genuinely know what they are doing when faced with a vm diesel.

Diesel fuel economy and performance is good. Most people are quite happy.

Pentastar is a great performer which is much simpler with cheaper parts. Obviously fuel economy is potentially a fair bit worse.

There is no correct choice just one that suits your needs the best.

Thanks Chris.... that's the type of feedback I was after! I know the fuel economy of the petrol sucks but I could always add a long range tank (I'm in WA) if necessary... assuming I can pay the fuel bill!

I actually prefer manuals as I feel more connected to the driving experience but it's good to know that the clutch might be a weak point... I was looking at a manual diesel but I think I'll broaden that to petrol now too...
